Thanks for sharing this – i particularly love the line “a threshold is crossed”, quite evocative. I’ve just started playing with tanka, it’s a wonderful form…
Interesting thing about milkweed…well a couple anyway, one of the few foods a monarch caterpillar will eat and my son’s friend has tried in vain to grow it either by transplant or seed. I’m not sure why as children we were always careful not to let the milky sap touch our skin.
I leave mine grow in the side parts of the yard. One year we found white pin point small Monarch caterpillar eggs which we took inside, fed and watch grow. A while back a photographer with an x-ray camera took a photo of the inside of a monarch chrysalis – that was nifty to see.
(PS…cluck, cluck as we say in our house…just chicken…)
I remember the parental admonition against getting the “milk” on you as well! And like you, I don’t recall what was supposed to happen if you ignored the warning.
Apparently after looking up Milkweed sap – this stuff can be very nasty – especially if you get it in your eyes – it can burn. If your pets eat too much of it they can die. And little children can get very bad tummy aches – best to keep them away too. I also saw some site that say milkweed sap has some advantages…but I didn’t look into them. Home remedies, well you really have to know what you are doing – like eating the right kind of wild mushrooms. And as for cancer cures…I’m sure that is after much processing in the lab. You can even buy the stuff online. I didn’t look up to see why – especially after seeing the warnings. I guess sometimes ‘Father Knows Best.’
Oh – I’ve decided it would be a good thing to eat more fruit. I’ve actually had two small cutie oranges today. Oh and I read a thing about food myths in the paper – Drinking 8 glasses of 8 ounces of water isn’t necessary if you are eating and drinking other food products that contain water – coffee counts (maybe not with heavy cream and tons of sugar (I use lactose free milk which is naturally sweet – so maybe I can cut out some of the sugar I put in. But I don’t drink all that much coffee). So fruit could be a good thing instead of a cookie or a can of soda. We can check up on each other
